Handcrafted House

Hero

From a distinctive setting to carefully chosen pieces, our homes say a lot about who we are. The Welcome Home series is our chance to ask inspiring people how they created a space they love.

Katie is the co-founder of The Post Supply, a lifestyle shop in Portland, Maine, known for well-made goods and everyday essentials. She lives in a 200-year-old home with her husband Brad—designer and founder of Joiya Studios—their two kids, and a sweet dog.

Their renovated 1820s home is filled with personal touches: Brad built every windowsill, shelf, and wooden detail, including the dining table where the family gathers each night. A friend sourced their floors from Craigslist; another painted the tiles behind the stove. “It’s all very personal to us,” Katie says. “I love that our kids love our home and feel safe and inspired here.”

That care shows up in the small things, too, like the way Katie styles a shelf. (For a step-by-step lesson, check out this post.)

“It can be a beautiful expression of taste and interests,” she says.

For her, home isn’t about perfection—it’s about making a space that feels good to live in.

What’s the story behind The Post Supply?

When Brad and I moved to Maine 10 years ago, I planned to leave the corporate world and start the store right away. But it took a few years—gaining more experience, growing our community, and having our two kids—before I felt ready to revisit that dream. During the pandemic, my longtime friend Hannah and I connected over a shared vision for a store and community-galvanizing brand. Partnering with her made the leap possible.

What has running a business taught you about yourself?

Running this business has taught me more than I could have imagined. It confirmed that I thrive off routine and organized systems and processes. I’m very good at certain things and not naturally skilled in others, and delegating those can be the most empowering thing. I’ve learned that everyone has a unique point of view—and there’s room for us all to do things our own way.

What makes you feel relaxed at home?

Most moms know the daily maintenance of a home can feel like a Sisyphean task, but I try to practice a chop wood, carry water, zen-like approach. Every day, I get better at choosing to sit down and do a puzzle with my daughter or lie on the floor with my Lego-loving son instead of vacuuming the crumbs in front of the pantry.

What do you look for in furniture?

I’ve had enough years of flat-pack furniture that inevitably falls apart, so now I look for quality. I look for real materials—hardwoods and quality textiles. If that means living without a bookshelf until I find the right one, so be it. I take my time.

What do you like about Sundays pieces?

I love that the textiles are performance materials because let's be honest, we’re all spilling everything all the time. I love the way they create a beautiful backdrop for life to occur on and around.
