Creative Family Haven

From a distinctive setting to carefully chosen pieces, our homes say a lot about who we are. The Welcome Home series is our chance to ask inspiring people how they created a space they love.

Faris Du Graf is the founder and designer behind FARIS, a sculptural jewelry line known for its bold forms and artful design. She lives in Seattle with her two young sons and her husband Zach, owner of ZTUDIO and Built by Self. Their home is cozy, minimal, and full of natural light, especially midday, when sun floods through the skylights. “The energy gets buzzy,” she says. “I always want to do something creative or productive.”

Faris started her business in Oakland, surrounded by a close-knit community of artists. Jewelry became her way of contributing to that creative scene.

“Looking back, that beginner’s mindset was a gift,” she says. “It helped me stay true to what felt right.”

Tell us a bit about your background in jewelry design.

I got into jewelry design and metalsmithing 20 years ago. I spent my nights and weekends taking design classes, and eventually saved up to spend a summer in London studying accessories design at Central Saint Martins. One instructor helped me understand how to build a collection and shape an idea into something cohesive. I loved turning a small amount of material into something meaningful and wearable.

What’s your favourite piece of furniture?

Our Chill Time couch feels so luxurious and practical at the same time. The whole family sinks into it for movie nights. I love imagining the boys growing up, turning into young men, and still piling onto that same couch together.

What has running a business taught you about yourself?

It has taught me to trust myself, especially my intuition and creative vision. When I started, I had massive impostor syndrome. I’ve learned that trusting that inner voice is one of my biggest strengths.

What do you look for in your furniture?

Something with character, whether that’s an unexpected form, pop of color, or history. If I’m bringing in something new, I look at all the pieces in that space and try to find something to balance the vibe. Nothing ever too matchy. And in the end, it has to be practical. The seat needs to sit.

What helps you feel relaxed at home?

Morning coffee when the house is still after my 4-year-old goes to daycare. Cooking for my friends and family. And this summer, I’m hoping for an abundant vegetable garden.
